Group Consciousness: The Extent to Which Minorities See Group Status as Politically Important

A key concept in understanding minorities’ attitudes and behaviors is group consciousness. Group consciousness is the idea that an individual identifies with a group and sees that identity as politically important. Specifically, researchers have suggested that group consciousness is comprised of some mix of the following:23

Individuals identifying with or seeing themselves as part of group.

A belief that the group faces discrimination or that failure of individuals to succeed is caused by systemic or institutional racism.

Dissatisfaction with the group’s status compared to other groups and desire for collective action.

Individuals prefer to be with people of their group, or feel close to their group.

A commitment to the group and/or that the group has a linked fate. Linked fate refers to the belief that individuals of a group are distinguished by society such that the fate of one person in the group is linked to the fate of all in the group.
